I just painted this picture. A child just died; a daily occurance in Iraq. This one was shot in the head. The Docs, nurses and medics tried for 45 minutes to keep the child alive . . . we failed. The pictures shows us surrounding the child and praying; the only thing left to do. The pictures seems somewhat pale, not very bright at all. I painted it that way. I used very diluted colors for everything but the blood on the child’s bandaged head, that is full strength red. The child is left white; no paint save for the shadow where the blanket comes up over the child’s bandaged head. The bright white shows up well amidst the duller colors of the picture . . . the child is the focus of our attention . . . and prayers.
